ONE heavyweight sensation Reug Reug put on an exceptional performance against Marcus Buchecha at ONE Fight Night 13. The Senegalese thinks a title fight could be next for him after beating the submission artist.

What a Fight

Reug Reug came in looking to complete a three-fight winning streak against Buchecha. Early in the fight, Reug Reug did what he does best and landed some hard shots on the 15-time BJJ champion but it wasn’t enough to knock Buchecha out in the first.

In the second round, Buchecha capitalized after Reug Reug slowed down due to exhaustion. The Brazilian managed to take the fight to the ground where he racked up some points for the better part of the round.

Both heavyweight stars entered the third and final round gassed out which resulted in wild and sloppy exchanges. Buchecha tried to go toe-to-toe with Reug Reug on the feet while still attempting to take the wrestler down every now and then. However, Reug Reug landed more vicious haymakers which helped convinced the judges to give him the nod.

After three rounds, Reug Reug was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Ready for a title Fight

In his post-fight interview with One Championship on SCMP, Reug Reug confidently said he thinks he is finally equipped for a title showdown with ONE heavyweight champion Anatoly Malykhin.

“Inshallah! Yeah. Inshallah! I’m ready. Everything inshallah, I am ready. I am ready… He’s a good guy you know, I am ready to fight this guy… This is my belt. I am ready,” Reug Reug said.

“It doesn’t make sense for me to wait you know I shouldn’t be waiting. One Championship is my house and this is my belt so I should be fighting,” he added.

Reug Reug was supposed to be Buchecha’s MMA debut opponent in 2021 but the Brazilian decided to pull out for undisclosed reasons. In 2022, they were booked for a match once again but the bout ended up being cancelled.

Despite not facing Reug Reug, Buchecha became one of ONE’s most promising fighters, having gone unbeaten in his first four fights under the promotion’s banner. On the other hand, Reug Reug also made waves in the company after knocking out Alain Ngalani in his ONE debut.

Reug Reug ended Buchecha’s impressive run and is now believed to be the new favorite to compete for the ONE heavyweight title next. As it stands, Reug Reug has a 6-1 pro MMA record.
