Neil Magny spoke about getting bested in training with Khamzat Chimaev and facing Gilbert Burns in Brazil.

The UFC welterweight division is just heating up. There is an official championship bout on the schedule between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman taking place in March and that means the top-ranked fighters will be vying for their shot at the winner. Two men that could have dibs on that number-one contender spot are Neil Magny and Gilbert Burns. These two men will be facing off at UFC 283 in Brazil this weekend and the winner could take on the champ.

Magny is coming off a win over Daniel Rodgriguez and quickly jumped on the chance to take in Burns in Brazil.

Neil Magny thinks a win over Gilbert Burns will get him into the title picture

Magny was a guest in The MMA Hour to discuss why he asked for this bout with Burns and what a win could do for his career.

“Getting the UFC title is the ultimate goal and I feel that beating a top-five guy gets me closer to that goal than ever,” he said. “So although he has all these accolades, although he’s a very skilled fighter and very talented fighter I just saw a huge opportunity for me to go out there and really progress my career and I was willing to do whatever it takes to get there.”

Before targeting the bout with Burns, Magny was looking to take on Khamzat Chimaev. He was one of the only men at 170 pounds that seems interested in a fight with Chimaev, and although that bout was not made, he had the opportunity to see how he would have fared against the rising star when the two trained together around Thanksgiving.

“100 percent, we had the opportunity to train in New York and the guy is definitely the real deal. The best way I can explain is like I f–ked around and found out, like, Khamzat is definitely the real deal,” he said. “There’s a video out there so I can’t even deny it, he definitely got the best of me that training session.”

Despite getting beat in training, Magny is still interested in a fight against Chimaev. Khamzat Chimaev is currently without a fight on the schedule and has entertained the opportunities to fight at welterweight or middleweight. He wants a title shot next in either division.
