- Jon Anik called out referee Kevin MacDonald for delayed stoppage in the Neil Magny vs. Mike Mallott fight at UFC 297
- “The Haitian Sensation” beat “Proper” via TKO in the third round
Jon Anik has let referee Kevin MacDonald know that he almost jeopardized Neil Magny’s TKO win over Mike Mallot at UFC 297 with his delayed stoppage.
It was the ref’s fault
Speaking on Anik and Florian podcast, Anik bluntly criticized MacDonald for pulling off another controversial call when he let “The Haitian Sensation” maul “Proper” for too long before stepping in to stop the fight.
“Kevin MacDonald has been on the wrong end of some of the earliest, most premature stoppages I have ever seen. I think the worst one I’ve ever seen was the first fight between Serhiy Sidey and Ramone Taveras on [Dana White’s Contender Series]. Way too early there, and T.J Dillashaw vs. Henry Cejudo was also Kevin MacDonald… Now I think Kevin is gonna have a long leash because of some of the recent things that have happened to him in there.”
“Thank goodness that Neil Magny wasn’t some sort of deprived of a win here because the referee wanted to let things go too long. I thought he let things go too long,” he continued.
Magny keeps moving on
Despite the controversy over his latest win, Magny remains focused on moving on. Apart from looking forward to his next opponent, “The Haitian Sensation” also said he has already let go of his feud with fellow UFC welterweight contender Ian Garry.
Magny’s TKO victory over Mallott saw him getting back to the win column. Before this, Magny suffered a unanimous decision loss to Garry at UFC 292. He now has a 29-11 pro MMA record.
