Josh Thomson discussed the positives and negatives of Ian Garry.
On Saturday night, August 19, ‘The Future’ extended his UFC record to 6-0 with a unanimous decision win against Neil Magny. Garry’s latest fight led to him jumping two spots in the welterweight rankings to number eleven. Despite the mixed reactions from fans, the Ireland native is emerging as a legitimate title contender at 170 pounds.
During an episode of the Weighing In podcast, former UFC fighter Josh Thomson had this to say about Garry:
“I like Ian Garry. I think he’s perfect for the sport. He’s a little over the top right now, so hopefully he dials it back a little bit. It’s a little cringe…I’m getting a sloppy seconds Conor McGregor. I like Ian Garry. I look at it a couple of different ways. He’s better looking than Conor. He’s got a great fighting style. He’s bigger than Conor, which means he’s already more marketable.”
Thomson isn’t the first person to compare Garry to Conor McGregor. Since making his UFC debut in November 2021, ‘The Future’ has showcased similar mannerisms and catchphrases to McGregor. Some fans believe he’s trying to emulate ‘The Notorious,’ while others think the rising welterweight contender is another Irish fighter being himself.

Josh Thomson believes Ian Garry should’ve shown Neil Magny respect after their fight
Neil Magny accepted the fight against Ian Garry on short notice after Geoff Neal pulled out. Magny and Garry quickly established a rivalry after ‘The Haitian Sensation’ said he would whoop ‘The Future’ as he does with his kid. As a result, Garry talked trash to Magny during their fight and showed him the middle finger several times.
During the same episode of the Weighing In podcast, Josh Thomson expressed his frustration with Garry disrespecting his short-notice opponent:
“I look at Ian Garry, the stuff he was saying [about Neil Magny], ‘he’s a scumbag.’ What did he say to get under your skin? He took the fight on short notice, so you can get paid. Show the guy some respect after you beat him. I’m sorry, the guy took the fight on one week’s notice and you didn’t get him out of there. You had him hurt in the first round by leg kicks.”
Shortly after getting his hand raised at UFC 292, Garry called out Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson for his next fight. Unfortunately, Dana White later claimed ‘Wonderboy’ isn’t interested in the matchup. Therefore, it’ll be intriguing to see who’s next for ‘The Future.’
