Robert Whittaker vs. Kelvin Gastelum Is Official For UFC 234 Main Headliner

Robert Whittaker To Defend His Middleweight Title Against Kelvin Gastelum At UFC 234

Earlier on Tuesday UFC announced that promotion’s second PPV event UFC 234 is set to land on February 9 from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. The event will be headlined by reigning 185-pound kingpin Robert Whittaker who’ll put his gold on the line against division’s top contender Kelvin Gastelum.

Whittaker and Gastelum both are currently serving as opposing coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter 28,” which will end on Nov. 30 and the event will be headlined by Rafael dos Anjos and Kamaru Usman.

‘The Reaper’ and ‘The American’ both are former TUF winners. Whittaker won “TUF: The Smashes” in 2012 and Gastelum won the middleweight tournament at show’s 17th season back in 2013.

Whittaker made his first title defense against Yoel Romero at UFC 213 for interim strap, where Cuban fell to Aussie via decision. Then in a nontitle rematch at UFC 225 back in June of 2018 Whittaker kicked Yoel Romero’s ass and won via split decision. Unfortunately, Whittaker suffered a hand injury during that bout that sidelines him for the remainder of the year.

Gastelum, a former welterweight contender, is currently riding a two-fight winning streak with a knockout win over Michael Bisping at UFC Shanghai this past November and a split decision win over Brazilian Ronaldo Souza in May of this year.
