Chael Sonnen believes that Sergei Pavlovich could be the next face of the heavyweight division.

There could be a new heavyweight king on the horizon in the UFC. Right now champion Jon Jones is looking to set up a fight with former champion Stipe Miocic later this year. Jones and Miocic have been going back and forth for several months now. They were first slated to fight back in December when champion Francis Ngannou relinquish his belt, however, that fight was never made at the time. Jones went on to fight Ciryl Gane, won the championship, and is now looking to make his retirement fight.

Miocic offered himself up to Jones in July during International Fight Week. Jones came back saying Madison Square Garden in November would be the perfect setting for his retirement bout. It seems that these two may never get on the same page. Now former fighter Chael Sonnen suggests somebody who is willing to step in and could make perfect sense.

Chael Sonnen believes Sergei Pavlovich is the man to take over the heavyweight division once Jones is through

Sonnen fought Jones back in his heyday. He knows just how good he is and has nothing but respect for his former opponent. However, he believes that he’s missing a real chance by not calling out last weekend‘s winner Pavlovich. At UFC Vegas 71 Pavlovich defeated Curtis Blaydes in the main event. He has set himself up as a number-one contender in the division and Sonnen believes that he could be the next superstar at heavyweight.

“We have Sergei Pavlovich, he’s five and five in his last five, inside of five, triple fives. Five guys, five knockouts inside of five minutes. Not to mention he’ll sign the contract on a fight that’s failed to get signed three different times,” he said on his YouTube channel. “He should be vocal he should be stepping up he should be loud and he should be boisterous and you know what I’d like to see Jon call for it.”

Sonnen also pointed out that for the three years, Jones was making his transition to heavyweight there was very little calling out from the upper echelon of the division. He believes that men like Pavlovich, Blaydes, and Tom Aspinall should be calling him out right now. With the trouble UFC is having making a fight with Miocic, one of these three men could find their way into a title fight. He also believes that maybe Jones himself should make the call as well.

Either way, it seems that Jones’s days in the UFC are numbered. When he does walk away Sonnen believes that it could be one of the young guys including Pavlovich that will become the face of that division.
