Vanessa Demopoulos and Joe Rogan’s viral moment
At UFC 270 this past January, Demopoulos picked up a big win over Silvana Gomez Juarez via first-round submission.
After the contest, Demopoulos was to take place in the traditional post-fight interview with commentator Joe Rogan. During the interview, Demopoulos leaped into Rogan’s arms.
As Demopoulos reflected on the event that left the internet in a state of awe, she explained that, although she had prepared for it in advance, it was just in the moment and she trusted that the plan would work out fine. Also, she wondered what would have transpired had Rogan refused to agree to it and had instead dropped her.
The moment went viral online, quickly making Demopoulos a recognizable name within the mixed martial arts (MMA) community. Now, speaking in a new interview with MMA Underground’s John Morgan, Demopoulos reflected on her moment with Rogan.
Simply put, she’s just glad that Rogan was nice enough to go along with it all.
“It was like, something that I thought about it and then when the moment was there I was like ‘Just do it, you know?’
“So like, yeah and Joe, he’s got such a cool vibe that I assumed he’d be down for it. I assumed he’d go along with it [and] I’m so grateful that he did. Could you imagine if he had just like, not gone with it, just like, denied me and dropped me or something?”
It doesn’t matter to Vanessa Demopoulos whether people remember her for her post-fight antics at UFC 270 or for her performance inside the octagon.
“When I get to fight, I am sharing that with the world, but I don’t give a damn who’s watching. I would fight if it was a completely empty arena with no cameras. I would put on the exact same performance, so, for me, this is something that I get to do because I really f***ing love this… It doesn’t matter how they’re watching what they’re watching for if they’re just like, ‘Oh, that chick’s got a booty’ or whatever. Everyone’s watching for a different reason, but at the end of the day, they’re tuning in. Yeah, that’s awesome”
Demopoulos’ latest win makes her now 1-1 in the UFC. Currently, her professional MMA record sits at 7-4. The 33-year-old strawweight competitor is looking to make a name for herself in an already stacked 115-pound division.
Currenty, the division is fronted by Carla Esparza, who recently unseated Rose Namajunas for the division crown. Of course, Demopoulos has a ways to go before breaking into the title conversation.
