One month from now, Islam Makhachev will be defending his UFC lightweight strap for the first time at UFC 284. The Dagestani fighter is well aware that he’s facing the pound-for-pound king, Alexander Volkanovski and he’s making sure his body will be equipped for an all-out war. To do so, Makhachev climbed the highest peak in Russia and Europe for conditioning.
Islam is literally on another level
Based on footage circulating on social media right now, Makhachev is currently somewhere on top of Mount Elbrus in Russia, a location which has an elevation of 18,510 feet above sea level, and a temperature of roughly -27 degrees Fahrenheit. In simpler terms, it’s one of the coldest places in the world and only those who could withstand sub-zero temperatures could train and condition in the area. Someone like Makhachev.

Volk is also prepping up
On the other hand, Makhachev’s opponent Volkanovski is currently working on getting in perfect shape come UFC 284. Volk previously said he is yearning to find the right balance and his idea is to come in lighter than a natural lightweight.
The reigning featherweight champ wants to be packed with muscles with a leaner body when he finally takes on Makhachev inside the cage.
Both Makhachev and Volkanovski know their significant difference in reach and height but “The Great” is confident he could utilize his short stature against his bigger opponent.

Volkanovski is striving to make history by attempting to become the UFC champion in two weight divisions. Makhachev, meanwhile, will try to prevent it from happening and make his mark on the sport as well by defending his lightweight strap on his opponent’s home soil.
UFC 284 is set to take place on Feb. 11 at the RAC Arena in Perth, Western Australia, Australia.
