Holly Holm is still chasing greatness even at the age of 40.
Holm returns to action for the first time since 2020 due to injuries this weekend at UFC Vegas 55. During her media day for the event, she was asked about a potential fight with Katie Taylor again. The former bantamweight champion was asked about the Irish boxer earlier this month on The MMA Hour, and she said she was intrigued.
A four weight division
Holm told reporters that she is still intrigued but gave a reason this time. Another belt.
“I think it’s good in life to dream, right? And you think about things that intrigue you and things that you look forward to and things that could possibly be exciting,” Holm told reporters during UFC Vegas 55 media day. “But I’m not getting so focused on that that I’m not focused on what I’m doing. I really am so MMA motivated right now. But when I do think about it sometimes- so I really was over boxing, because nothing was really like sparking my passion. And I think passion has to be there, or else you’re not going to do well, in this sport, any kind of fighting sport, your passion needs to be in place.”
“It would intrigue me for the fact that it’s at a whole different weight class. I fought at 140, 147, and 154. I’ve never fought at 135 in boxing. That’s mostly been my MMA career. So it’s like, am I supposed to go back and fight at a fourth weight, and get a title in a fourth weight division? And not only that but against the best in the world?”
Compete at the highest level
Holm wants to compete against the very best in whatever sport, and she thinks going back to boxing to fight Katie Taylor would do that for her.
“To be able to show that I can go back, and compete at the highest level, and still get a belt. Does that intrigue me? Yes. So that kind of sparks some of that passion that hasn’t been there. But, that’s not what my goal is right now. My goal is MMA, and I still have my contract in place and my fights in place, and I want to win here regardless,” Holm said.
First things first, Holm has to defeat her opponent Ketlen Vieira in the main event of UFC Vegas 55 and defend her No. 2 ranking. However, if she does, the possibilities are endless as boxing promoter Eddie Hearn says he is eyeing a Taylor vs. Holm match-up in the future.
