Henry Cejudo praised Kelvin Gastelum after his first win since February 2021.

At UFC 287, Gastelum silenced the doubters with a unanimous decision win against Chris Curtis, earning the $50,000 fight of the night bonus. The former UFC middleweight title challenger conducted his training camp at Fight Ready MMA, where Cejudo trains and helps coach.

During a video on his YouTube channel, Cejudo reacted to Gastelum’s statement win by saying:

“After a year and a half layoff, Kelvin to the d o double g, from Yuma, Arizona, finally comes through to get his victory. Long time coming. It’s crazy how many losses Kelvin has, but who is it that he’s actually fought? Fighting a hammer like Chris Curtis, I tell you what, Kelvin looked better than ever. Kicked the leg, used the hands, did an amazing job with this fight, and I just think it’s only up here for Kelvin.

Gastelum held a 5-2 record in the UFC welterweight division before weight-cutting issues led to a permanent move to middleweight. Now that the 31-year-old is more experienced as a fighter, Cejudo believes he should move back to 170 pounds. ‘Triple C’ had this to say:

“I think if Kelvin decides to go to 170 pounds, I think he becomes champion, I really do. I sincerely sincerely mean that. Get him on a good weight program, somebody he can trust, maybe have him not puff and pass so d*mn much. If Kelvin’s able to do that, I think he’d be a lethal lethal weapon at 170 pounds, so you guys don’t cross that man out.”

Henry Cejudo wants to see a rematch between Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya

In April 2019, Kelvin Gastelum fought Israel Adesanya for the UFC interim middleweight championship. Adesanya emerged victorious by decision in one of the greatest fights of all time. Now that Gastelum is back on track, Henry Cejudo thinks he could be working towards a massive comeback that could lead to a rematch with ‘The Last Stylebender.’

During the same YouTube video, Cejudo had this to say about Gastelum’s future if he stays at middleweight:

“I think Kelvin could have the greatest comeback of all time, I really do. I think he could really be problematic for a guy like Israel [Adesanya], as we saw in their first fight. Who wouldn’t want to see Kelvin Gastelum [vs.] Israel Adesanya 2?”

After losing against Adesanya, Gastelum suffered defeats in his next two fights against Darren Till and Jack Hermansson. He bounced back briefly against Ian Heinisch before losing two more Octagon appearances against Robert Whittaker and Jared Cannonier. At UFC 287, the 31-year-old fought for the first time since losing against Cannonier in August 2021.
