Murat Gonul was born on 6 Jan. 1977 and grew up in his native land of Istanbul, Turkey. He found his passion for bodybuilding early in life and started competing on stage in 2000. His potential was evident from the start as he won the IFBB Turkey World Championship in the 70-kg category. He continued competing at various shows and went on to win the IFBB Turkey Championship in the 85-kg class and overall in 2010.

Following a string of impressive performances, Gonul took to the sidelines in 2014. He returned after a four-year hiatus in 2018 and made a statement with a win at the IFBB Iron Rebel Europe Show as a 90-kg competitor.

He gained attention for his incredible symmetry and proportions in the IFBB Pro League in 2019. He made his way to the New York Pro, finishing 14th in the Men’s 212 category. He followed up with another showing at the Niagara Falls Pro, where he finished 7th in the division.

Gonul took some time off to work on his physique and did not return until 2021. He came back with a significantly enhanced package and managed to crack the top five at the Toronto Pro Supershow in the 212 class. The performance turned Gonul into one of the most promising 212-division prospects in the sport.

His latest appearance was at the 2022 IFBB Toronto Pro Supershow where he improved his standing and finished runner-up behind the champion Hossein Kalateh.

In a recent Instagram post, RxMuscle shared the unfortunate news of the death of Murat Gonul at just 46 years old.

“We’re saddened to report the passing of IFBB Pro Murat Gonal. We send our condolences and warmest wishes to his family, loved ones, and fans.”

There are not many details available regarding his death at the time of writing. Physique coach Jason Green of Team Green, which Gonul’s wife was a member of, revealed that Gonul was on vacation in Costa Rica and faced difficulties in returning back to Canada. He paid his respects and shared that he plans to set up a GoFundMe page to raise donations for Gonul’s family.

“Regrettably, RX Muscle has just reported that Murat Gonul, the husband of TG’s Funda Gonul has passed away. Details are slim right now and they recently went away on vacation to Costa Rica. I had been conversing with him over and issue they were having getting back into Canada and we had discussed maybe working together for upcoming competitions. Anyone who has met Funda and Murat will attest to how honest, humble and sweet these two humans are.

“I have reached out to Funda to find out more details as it’s unknown if this happened in Costa Rica or here in Canada. For those that don’t know, they are recent immigrants to Canada from Turkey and I suspect there are many challenges ahead for Funda. Once I find out more details, I will likely start a Go Fund Me page to help.”

Middle Easy sends condolences to Gonul’s family and friends and extends support during this challenging period.
