It was a battle of two of Mexico’s finest boxers, and in the end, the veteran champion proved too much for the rising challenger.
Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, the undisputed super middleweight king, put on a masterclass performance to defend his titles against the game Jaime Munguía at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
From the opening bell, Álvarez showcased his superior skills, using his slick footwork and sharp counterpunching to keep the younger Munguía at bay. The 33-year-old champion was in complete control, dictating the pace and landing the cleaner, more impactful shots throughout the 12-round contest.
Álvarez Drops Munguía in the 4th
The defining moment of the fight came in the fourth round when Álvarez landed a thunderous uppercut that sent Munguía crashing to the canvas. It was a testament to the Tijuana native’s toughness that he was able to beat the count and continue fighting.
Munguía’s Valiant Effort Falls Short
To his credit, Munguía never stopped coming forward, trying his best to pressure Álvarez and land his heavy shots. The 27-year-old challenger displayed immense heart and determination, but Álvarez’s experience and technical mastery proved too much for him to overcome.
Unanimous Decision Victory for Canelo
When the final bell rang, there was no doubt who the winner was. The judges scored the fight 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112 in favor of Álvarez, who improved his record to an impressive 61-2-2 with 39 knockouts.”This was a great Mexican war, just as I expected,” Álvarez said after the fight. “Munguía is a tough, game opponent, but I was able to use my skills and experience to get the job done.”The victory solidifies Álvarez’s status as one of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time, and he continues to cement his legacy as the undisputed king of the super middleweight division.
Score: Canelo Alvarez defeated Jaime Munguia (117-110, 116-111, 115-112)
