Sean O’Malley is trying to follow the Conor McGregor blueprint as he is now considering a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

Sean wants the big dog

Speaking to The MMA Hour, “Sugar” reiterated that he is still interested in making his boxing debut. However, O’Malley is no longer convinced that Ryan Garcia is mentally fit to become his opponent.

For the reigning bantamweight champ, he might consider leapfrogging everybody and take on Mayweather instead.

“I just think mentally that kid is not where he needs to be,” O’Malley said of Garcia. “We’ll see how he looks against Devin Haney and kind of go from there. I feel like an MMA fight is just so unrealistic. There’s zero percent chance he would ever even make it to that fight.”

O’Malley also pointed out that Garcia’s idea of facing him in an MMA match is all the more impossible.

“It would take him one MMA session, one wrestling day, one jiu-jitsu [day], with anybody who knows anything for him to realize, ‘Okay, never mind. This is a bad idea,’” he explained. “If anything would happen, it would be boxing. I don’t even know if I want a build up to that kind of fight with where his head’s at right now… It may not be it but there’s big fights still up there. Floyd [Mayweather’s] still kicking. Floyd’s still running around the boxing room. I keep going out there and do what I’m doing, I might just skip Ryan, I might skip Gervonta and go straight to the big dog.”

The UFC may not like it

After UFC 299, O’Malley immediately expressed his desire to move up to featherweight and face Ilia Topuria. However, “El Matador” and even UFC boss Dana White aren’t sold on the idea. With that in mind, a boxing showdown with Garcia or Mayweather may not be as easy as it sounds as well.

As it stands, many have been urging “Sugar” to defend his title against No. 1 bantamweight contender Merab Dvalishvili.
