Conor McGregor explained why he returned as a coach to The Ultimate Fighter opposite Michael Chandler ahead of a highly-anticipated bout.
Former UFC two-division champion McGregor has been out of action since facing Louisiana brawler Dustin Poirier in Jul.2021 at UFC 264. He suffered a horrific leg break injury and got forced to the sidelines for an extended period of time. As the biggest draw in the sport, there was a lot of speculation about whether he would be able to bounce back from the injury.
Company president Dana White confirmed McGregor would make his comeback as a coach alongside Chandler on the latest season of TUF earlier this year. He added to the excitement with the news of a showdown between McGregor and ‘Iron’ Mike for later this year.
Conor McGregor reveals motivations for coming back
In a recent interview with Oscar Willis of The Mac Life, Conor McGregor revealed his motivations for coming back to the fight game.
“To be fully immersed in the game, the business, and the company, and to be around these young hungry fighters coming up,” said McGregor. “I put myself back in the mix, go back on the horse. That was my reason for doing it. Also, to give back to the game.”
The 34-year-old Dubliner is getting involved in training with the athletes on his team, unlike his previous appearance years ago. He believes working with the up-and-coming contenders helps him get back where he needs to be before his return.
McGregor breaks down the Chandler fight
‘The Notorious’ shared his analysis of the upcoming fight with Chandler, expected to take place later this year.
“I actually like Michael, had a good little buzz with him yesterday, no issues with him at all. I think he’s a good fighter and coaching against him, I’m interested to see his coaching style. He’s more of an athlete type of a guy than a technical martial artist. I know he’s got some skills in the wrestling department and he’s got some skills overall. But as far as like, the small finer details, I just don’t think, I’m not sure… I’m interested to see. I’m happy where I’m at so it’d be an interesting one to go against him before I go against him.”
“I think I’m just going to slice right through him. I’m a little too slicey for him than anyone he’s fought. A little too snappy and whippy and I think I’ll slice through him.
Conor McGregor faced criticism for allegedly getting some contestants on the roster kicked out to bring in his teammates. TUF 31 will air from May 30 through August 15 with a bout between the coaches to follow later.
