- A video of trans woman amateur MMA fighter Gita-Marie Figueroa’s TKO loss to his male opponent resurfaced
- Figueroa suffered another TKO loss since then
In 2022, transgender lightweight fighter Gita-Marie Figueroa took on male fighter Shane Mistretta in an amateur MMA match. The fight did not go Figueroa’s way and she was ultimately knocked out.
A nasty knockout
For obvious reasons, transgender fighters have been controversial and some say trans women fighters have a tremendous advantage over female fighters in combat sports. While that might be true, it wasn’t the case with Figueroa, who has been competing in the men’s division in amateur MMA.
Figueroa was triumphant in her MMA debut against Gregorio Gonzales at World Class Fight League 31 in February 2022. But her success was cut short when she faced Mistretta four months later at World Class Fight League 32 which took place at The Bryan Glazer Family JCC in Tampa, Florida.
Figueroa started out guns blazing, landing some good combinations and pulling off successful takedowns. However, her rhythm was cut short when Mistretta finally picked up his pace and began unloading a flurry of devastating punches.
Mistretta managed to land several hard shots on Figueroa’s face and eventually floored the trans-woman fighter. The referee in charge immediately realized that Figueroa was knocked out cold and wouldn’t be able to get back on her feet.
At the 2:35 mark of the very first round, the referee stopped the fight and declared Mistretta the winner via TKO.

Another tough loss
In the next World Class Fight League event held in October last year, Figueroa competed again and clashed with Manny Pinto. Once again, Figueroa suffered another TKO loss only this time, she didn’t even make it past the first two minutes of the fight.
Figueroa now holds an MMA record of 1-2 in the amateur ranks. In March of the current year, Figueroa competed in kickboxing and secured a split decision victory over her fellow transgender fighter Brittany Vaughn.
