Ex-UFC fighter Tim Kennedy has found irony in Brittney Griner’s situation.

Griner, who is widely regarded as the best female basketball player of all time, was arrested in Moscow in the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on charges of drug possession, although the charges appear to be false. As of now, she is still in custody and has been held in pre-trial detention for more than two months.

Phoenix Mercury star is currently in a Russian jail for possessing marijuana, hoping the U.S. government can negotiate her release. Last week, Griner pleaded guilty to a drugs charge in a Russian court but said she did not break any law.

Ironic

Last week, former UFC fighter Kennedy called her out on his Instagram.

“Do you remember that time that you were protesting your own government and even requesting that the National Anthem not be played at your games, then going back to this same government and pleading that they intervene on your behalf to get you out of a Russian prison after you illegally brought drugs into their country.  Does not get more ironic than this,” Kennedy wrote on Instagram “Even with her despicable behavior, I do believe that every American is worth fighting for even those that hate their own country. #russia #BrittanyGriner.

Kennedy is referencing the time that the basketball star knelt during the national anthem as a way to protest police brutality against Black people in the United States.

Kennedy trying to be funny

On Tuesday, Kennedy again posted about Griner, but this time tried to make a joke about her being in jail without being able to smoke the drug she is being locked up for.

“It’s amazing what getting sober can do for someone,” Kennedy wrote on his Instagram.
