An update on the imprisonment of Phil Baroni has surfaced.
Earlier this week, rumors began spreading about Baroni, a former UFC fighter, being arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend in Mexico. Since then, multiple outlets have confirmed the news, leaving the MMA community with a mix of shock and disgust. According to Carlos Contreras Legaspi, the 46-year-old has been transferred to a new facility. The ESPN Deportes reporter had this to say:
“UPDATE on the Phil Baroni case. The former Pride/SF/UFC fighter has been transported to Tepic, capital of Nayarit, where he is now in a State Prison (CERESO)… His hearing will be on Monday where a judge will determine he’s legal status. If guilty, sentence goes from 30-50 years.”
‘The New York Badass’ competed in the UFC ten times with a record of 3-7. He also made appearances with Strikeforce, ONE Championship, and Pride Fighting Championship. The Long Island native was known for his aggressive fight style and outgoing personality before continuing to spiral out of control.
Josh Barnett shed some light on the harsh reality that Baroni’s erratic behavior could be a result of CTE. Barnett claimed ‘The New York Badass’ was increasingly challenging to work as he became unbearable. The potential brain damage of the 46-year-old has led to an irreversible action that could take away his freedom forever.

Does Phil Baroni have a chance of being proven not guilty?
It’s not looking good for Phil Baroni. Although the details aren’t confirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt, the rumored story is as follows. The 46-year-old allegedly began arguing with his girlfriend after she admitted to cheating. One thing led to another, and Baroni ended up throwing his girlfriend in the bathroom, where she hit her head and ended up dying.
Once again, these details are not confirmed, and Baroni is innocent until proven guilty. With that said, the rumors state he then called the police and told them what happened, leading to his immediate arrest. On Monday, January 9, the 46-year-old could be officially charged with murder.
It’s unknown whether Baroni has a lawyer or will even be allowed to defend himself in front of a jury. Unless something drastic happens, ‘The New York Badass’ is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison.
The news about Phil Baroni is terrible and incredibly tragic as well.
I've known Phil for 2 decades + and at the 1st JB Bloodsport show could see that his personality and behavior was erratic, displaced, and emotionally he was all over the place and it was obvious why: CTE
