Gilbert Burns does agree with Leon Edwards that the champ does have a say in who he fights next.

In the main event of UFC 286 in England on Saturday, Edwards defended his welterweight title for the first time when he edged out a majority decision over Kamaru Usman in the trilogy match. It was a solid performance from the Brit and after the win, many wondered what would be next for him.

Many fans pointed to Belal Muhammad as a logical next opponent, but Colby Covington was the backup fighter and Jorge Masvidal is also facing Burns at UFC 287 which are money fights for Edwards. Yet, after the event, Dana White announced Covington would be next but since then, Edwards has said he won’t face Covington as he doesn’t think ‘Chaos’ deserves it.

Burns likes Edwards’ approach

Burns, meanwhile, thinks Edwards can tell the UFC who he wants to fight next, even though White is adamant it will be Covington.

“Now that you are the champion, yes for sure. Now you have a say and now they can not take you out of the ranks, now you for sure have a say. He just beat the pound-for-pound number one twice, and convincingly, one with a crazy knockout and now convincingly at home,” Burns said to The AllStar. “I guess the pay-per-view was great, the gate was great, they have to give this guy a say a little bit, especially when it doesn’t make sense. Sometimes it does make sense, like GSP coming back or Conor coming back, yeah those guys jump the line. But Colby Covington? I don’t know. But sometimes they offer him (Edwards) some couple extra things and he might take it, but I like his approach right now.”

As of right now, Leon Edwards says he will return sometime in late summer and perhaps he faces the winner of Burns-Masvidal next if he truly won’t fight Covington. If that is the case, Burns likes the matchup for him as he believes he would get his hand raised and become the new welterweight champ.
