Dustin Poirier is waiting for the right opportunity to return to the Octagon.
Over the last twelve years, Poirier has established himself as a massive superstar during his 29-fight UFC tenure. The 34-year-old is at the stage of his career where every fight needs to make sense for several reasons, leading to an unclear future for him in the Octagon.
On July 29, Poirier fought Justin Gaethje for the BMF title in the UFC 291 main event. ‘The Diamond’ looked good in round one, but Gaethje ultimately emerged victorious with a second-round head kick knockout win.
During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Dustin Poirier was asked about what’s next for him in the UFC. He responded by saying:
“I’m keeping my weight low in case something happens. I’m super low right now, I’ve been like that for the last month. I don’t have any plans. If they call me with a name that’s exciting or makes sense, like the [Justin] Gaethje thing, then that was one of those. I was kinda of waiting for something fun… We will see. When they call with that name then I’ll do it.”
Dustin Poirier is intrigued by Justin Gaethje trilogy fight at UFC 300
In April 2024, the UFC is expected to reach a historic milestone with a highly-anticipated event, UFC 300.
As the new year quickly approaches, rumors have begun spreading about who could be fighting at the event, including Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler potentially being the main event.
During the previously mentioned interview with MMA Junkie, Dustin Poirier had this to say about the possibility of fighting at UFC 300:
“I’m not gonna be here at UFC 400. I’m 34 years old. So, to make it on that UFC 300 card would be cool if I get the right opponent, an exciting fight. I could fight before then. Who knows?”
Poirier was then asked about a potential trilogy fight with Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. ‘The Diamond’ voiced his interest by saying:
“I would take that, for sure. For sure, I would take that fight. [UFC] 300 would be a great card to do it on, but we will see. If I was in Justin’s shoes, if he’s guaranteed a title shot, you might not want to risk it, but, hey, this is fighting, people get antsy. We’ll see what happens, but I’m definitely open to that.”
Justin Gaethje’s win against Dustin Poirier will likely lead to the ‘The Highlight’ earning a UFC lightweight title shot against the winner of Islam Makhachev vs. Charles Oliveira 2. Therefore, Gaethje might want to wait to ensure his next fight is for UFC gold.
