  • Justin Gaethje reflected on his UFC 300 knockout loss to Max Holloway
  • “The Highlight” confessed to not having the right strategy to possibly beat “Blessed”

Justin Gaethje admitted that he didn’t do what he needed to do at UFC 300 and Max Holloway was the better fighter that night.

Max was at his best

Speaking to Anik & Florian, “The Highlight” came clean about not having the “correct game plan” against “Blessed” at UFC 300. Gaethje also acknowledged that on the other hand, Holloway pulled off a stellar performance and got the sensational knockout win in the process.

“My game plan wasn’t necessarily the correct game plan, but that’s always something you can know after the fact,” Gaethje reflected. “I think he fought an amazing fight, and he was very precise and perfect that night, and that was a very tough Max Holloway to beat.

“I think I would have pressured more. I would have tried to move forward and fight at not… I thought he would come to me, and then when he did come, it was far between, where it was so unpredictable and fast that I could, I didn’t see it or find it.

“If I would have been inside and like I did in the fourth round, similar to the fourth round, only round that I for sure think I won, I moved forward. I was trying to step on his feet and, yeah, I think that was the way that I had to fight that fight, at least from the second round on.”

Max could defend his BMF title against Chandler but not now

With Holloway’s last-second KO win over Gaethje earning reputation as arguably the greatest knockout in MMA history, Michael Chandler is now interested in challenging “Blessed” for the BMF title following the cancellation of his showdown with Conor McGregor.

While that sounds exciting, it’s unlikely to happen soon as Holloway is already reportedly booked for a title fight with reigning featherweight champion Ilia Topuria at UFC 306 at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

As for Gaethje, “The Highlight” previously said he just needs about six months of recovery and he’d be good to go. Gaethje is expecting to bounce back stronger after being on the wrong end of one of the most epic moments in UFC history.
