Chael Sonnen is frustrated that Alexander Volkanovski wasn’t given the win against Islam Makhachev.

Volkanovski silenced the doubters by putting on a valiant effort at UFC 284. Unfortunately for him, Makhachev did enough to retain the UFC lightweight champion by unanimous decision. The tradition of fans claiming robbery was extended as there were people who felt ‘The Great’ should have won.

During a video on his YouTube channel, Sonnen had this to say about the UFC 284 main event

“Interesting contest. I’m not positive that you got it right, but I don’t really live in that world that comes in and questions judges. There were some very meaningful positions that I think you would have a hard time explaining. I don’t begrudge your decision that you saw that Islam won…

Although some people believe Volkanovski won at least three rounds, Sonnen thinks the featherweight king should have won for another reason:

“What I begrudge is the lack of courage that you showed by giving Islam the fight and not doing when we have an industry standard of doing in giving it to the hometown guy. The hometown guy who was undersized, the only one who had any interest there tonight [with the crowd]… You give it to the guy.”

Chael Sonnen labels the UFC 284 judges as cowards

Chael Sonnen always wears his heart on his sleeve when expressing his point of view. Whether he was exaggerating for the video or not, Sonnen had some harsh words for the UFC 284 judges:

“You wouldn’t have done it in Brazil. When the Brazilian crowd was chanting, you will die, you little judges you’d have done the right thing, believe me. You would’ve screwed him and given it to the hometown guy… You went into the underdog, undersized’s hometown, who outperformed every expectation, and you did not give him the fight. You are a coward. All three of you.

Islam Makhachev defeated Alexander Volkanoski by unanimous decision (49-46 and 48-47 x2). There is an argument that Volkanovski deserved the win, but Makhachev should not be ridiculed after securing his first lightweight title defense.
