Ben Askren Says UFC Not Giving Nate Diaz Title Shot After UFC 244

Ben Askren finds the BMF title fight between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal very interesting. However he thinks it only earns one man a shot at the welterweight title, with a win.

Askren has been very interested in the UFC 244 main event between Diaz and Masvidal. His fight with Masvidal is likely what helped make the fight a possibility. Albeit, it did come at the expense of Askren’s first professional loss.

Nevertheless, Askren is watching closely in the lead up to this fight. When speaking with Submission Radio, he was asked if he thought the BMF belt would be a recurring ting, or just one and done.

“Oh, the BMF, that’s a one-off. They’re gonna do it one time and it’s whatever, it’s gone. You know, handed it one time, it’s kind of cool, now done and gone with. So, I think if Jorge wins, then he gets a title shot, and I would venture to guess that’s who’s gonna win. Although, I can’t be entirely certain, that’s where I would probably lean.”

However, according to Ben, the title shot is only going to happen for Masvidal, not Diaz.

“if Nate wins, I just have a hard time (giving him a title shot). Could you give him a title shot? Sure, right? But then again, he’s only beaten Anthony and Jorge, and that’s really it in the last, what, he took three years off or something? So that makes him challenging for the title fight. So, I think he could, but you probably would look to put him in a different fight of some kind. And then if Jorge wins, then I believe Jorge goes for a title.

Ben Askren has a good point, about Nate Diaz getting a title shot. Regardless, if he is able to get passed Jorge Masvidal, Diaz will likely get whatever fight he chooses.
