UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski believes he will make his UFC 298 fight look easy, and if he does, he’s open to potentially turning around for UFC 300.
Volkanovski is set to defend his featherweight title in the main event of the pay-per-view card on Saturday against Ilia Topuria. In the lead-up to the fight, Topuria has been full of confidence as he’s already calling himself the featherweight champion, which doesn’t affect Volkanovski.
However, Alexander Volkanovski is fully confident he will beat Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 and thinks he could rag-doll the title challenger.
“It doesn’t get to me. If I didn’t go out there and do what happened in October, these conversations are much different — believe me. You can say all you want, ‘This is the guy.’ Post-fight press conference, it’s gonna be a totally different conversation,” Volkanovsaki said at the UFC 298 media day. “I’m ready for a young, hungry prospect to come and bring a fight but I won’t be surprised, and you shouldn’t be surprised, if I make it look easy. I’m not saying that’s exactly how it is. I’m not cocky like that. I’ve prepared properly, but if he doesn’t land a punch and I rag-doll him and make him look like nothing in there, you shouldn’t be surprised.”
It would be a statement-making win if Volkanovski does make his UFC 298 fight look easy against Ilia Topuria on Saturday night.
Alexander Volkanvski open to UFC 300 turnaround
If Alexander Volkanovski does get his hand raised and rag-doll Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 as he expects, the Aussie is open to making a quick turnaround for UFC 300 if needed.
The featherweight champ knows the main event isn’t set, so if he comes out unscathed, Volkanovski is open to fighting on the historic card.
“You know what, I think they are struggling maybe, or they could be, I don’t know, whether they are with UFC 300, I know a guy. It’s plenty of time, so just so you know that. Dana, Hunter, you know a guy. I’m going to do some business, ruin someone’s party or a few people’s party, and then save the day like I always do,” Volkanovski said.
Whether or not the UFC would want Volkanovski to headline UFC 300 is uncertain, but he is putting the offer out there.
