Yep, Alexander Volkanovski is a savage.

Volkanovski is coming off a one-sided beat down of Max Holloway in their highly anticipated trilogy at UFC 276 in July. In the fight, ‘The Great’ broke his hand and was required to have surgery.

UFC 280 Backup

Most people figured he would be out until December at the earliest, with a return date of early 2023. Well, according to Volkanovski, he plans to be the backup fighter for the lightweight championship fight between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 in October.

“I’m actually thinking, believe it or not, because I’m still training- If they need a backup fighter [for UFC 280], I’m gonna be the guy that’s gonna be there,” Volkanovski told Daniel Cormier on Cormier’s YouTube channel. “I’m telling [the UFC] that I want to be there. I’ll be the backup. I’m gonna be fit enough, I’m gonna get a good enough camp to stay in good enough fitness, and I’ll do it. You know what I mean? That’s the type of guy I am.”

“Again, as I always say, I’ll make sure no one else can take that opportunity away from me because if someone else goes and does that, I have to wait even longer and I don’t like that. So, I’m happy to sit there and if someone gets injured or doesn’t make weight or whatever, I’ll step in.”

Volk picks Makhachev but wants Oliveira

If Volkanovski doesn’t end up fighting for the lightweight belt on October 22, he says he will most likely be fighting Makhachev because he believes the Russian defeats Oliveira.

However, the featherweight champion believes he vs. Oliveira is the bigger fight.

“I think Charles would be a bigger fight because there is so much hype on him, and he’s defending champ and all that type of stuff. And I know he’ll fight early next year, which that timeline is better for me,” Volkanovski said.
