Daniel Cormier Says Ilia Topuria Saying ‘No’ To Alexander Volkanovski And Other Top Contenders Is ‘Weird’

DC has been wondering why "El Matador" keeps saying "no."

  • Daniel Cormier finds Ilia Topuria’s lack of interest in facing Alexander Volkanovski and other top contenders “weird”
  • DC thinks “El Matador” should clarify what he wants to happen sooner rather than later

Daniel Cormier has been baffled by Ilia Topuria’s way of thinking as he seems to keep on turning down legitimate title contenders.

DC couldn’t read Ilia

Speaking on his YouTube channel, DC weighed in on “El Matador” and what lies ahead of the featherweight championship. For Cormier, it’s quite difficult to understand what Topuria wants as he has rejected a rematch with Alexander Volkanovski, he’s not interested in taking on Brian Ortega either, and only wants Max Holloway if the BMF title is also on the line.

In Cormier’s eyes, the rightful title challengers as of now are “Blessed” and “The Great.”

“I don’t know when looking at those rankings who would be next. Now he’s agreed to fight Max Holloway he said Max Holloway has something very valuable to him and that’s the BMF Championship he’ll fight Max but only if Max’s BMF title is on the line too. So, ‘Ilia Topuria is the champ, and as the champ at times you have some say into who you’re gonna fight, when you’re gonna fight and you’re ready and all that. I don’t know though, if he has as much say in this as he thinks he does. Max Holloway to me, is clearly the guy. If not, Alexander Volkanovski,” Cormier said.

Ilia needs to do something about his situation

As a former champion himself, Cormier knows that champions get to say who they prefer to fight. However, DC also understood that there are also limitations to what a champion could demand.

The way Cormier sees it, “El Matador” needs to make it look like he really wants to defend his title because at this point, it is kind of “weird” that he still doesn’t have a target opponent.

“He’s in a situation where he’s gonna have to fight one of those names that he doesn’t seem to want to fight. So, now he can start to make it seem like it’s them that’s the holdup and not him, that’s what he needs to do because right now, it’s just weird. He’s not telling us what’s next, but he’s saying no to a lot of things that can be right now. And I don’t know that you can do that as the champ,” Cormier commented.

As it stands, Volkanovski’s team is still hoping for a rematch with Topuria. On the other hand, Holloway is convinced that “El Matador” is ducking every elite fighter in their division.
