The 35th edition of the annual IFBB Arnold Sports Festival is set to take place Mar. 2-5 in Columbus, Ohio. The event features two days of multi-sport action, including professional bodybuilding, strongman, fitness, figure, and bikini.

Bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger is widely regarded as the most popular and one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time with seven Mr. Olympia titles under his belt. Following a glittering career in the sport, ‘The Austrian Oak’ joined forces with Jim Lorimer to provide a platform for budding contenders, called the Arnold Sports Festival in 1989. The show gained widespread acclaim and quickly evolved into the second most prestigious annual contest in bodybuilding, next to only Joe Weider’s Olympia Fitness and Performance Weekend.

ASF serves as the first show of the bodybuilding season for many up-and-coming athletes who will look to leave their mark on stage. A successful start at the ASF adds a boost to the contenders before they begin to prep for the Mr. Olympia competition later this year.

Arnold Classic Men’s Open Preview

Multiple former champions and promising prospects will form the stacked lineup. The organizers upped the ante by increasing the prize money for the winner of the Men’s Open class to a record $300,000 last month. The move worked wonders as it attracted even more competitors to make a quick turnaround for the contest after the 2022 Mr. Olympia about three months ago.

Reigning champion Brandon Curry will not be coming back to defend the title, which means the title is bound to change hands.

Men’s Open lineup

  • Nick Walker
  • Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay
  • William Bonac
  • Samson Dauda
  • Andrew Jacked (Chinedu Andrew Obiekea)
  • Shaun Clarida
  • Kamal Elgargni
  • Akim Williams
  • Patrick Moore
  • Justin Rodriguez

Former Arnold Classic champion Nick Walker enters the show as the highest-ranked Olympian and the betting favorite to win. He turned in an exceptional performance at the latest Olympia, where he finished third and won the People’s Champ award. He will look to secure his second title along with the eye-watering prize money.

Nick Walker Arnold Classic Update

Former two-time Mr. Olympia Mamdouh ‘Big Ramy’ Elssbiay will target redemption after getting dethroned at the Olympia last December. His coach Chad Nicholls is confident Ramy has fixed the issues that got in his way on stage in Las Vegas. Many have already said it’s a make-or-break situation for the Egyptian native who has also received major backing to pull off a sensational comeback.

William Bonac is eyeing adding the third Arnold Classic under his belt after winning the show in 2018 and 2020. Rising contender Samson Dauda has gained a lot of attention going into the show. After finishing sixth in his Olympia debut, Dauda believes he’s destined to come out on top of the contest. Andrew Jacked is another name that will likely pose a serious threat to everyone at the event. He emerged as one of the brightest prospects last season and has convinced the likes of four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler that he will be at the highest level in the near future.

Two-time 212 Olympia champion Shaun Clarida and former 212 Olympia king Kamal Elgargni are gearing up to make their splash in the Open category at the 2023 Arnold Classic. While they don’t fit the contemporary mold of the Open class, ‘The Giant Killer’ has the potential to shake things up for the mass monsters in the lineup with his impressive package.

Fans will be excited to see some of the most elite bodybuilders return for another fierce battle on stage in the next few days. Considering the diversity of the roster, it’ll be interesting to see who gets the nod from the judges when all is said and done.
