Gilbert Burns claims Jorge Masvidal has already agreed to fight him, and the UFC is trying to narrow down a date.
Gilbert Burns Claims Jorge Masvidal Fight In Works
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Burns confirmed that “Gamebred” has verbally agreed to the welterweight matchup, but maintained nothing has officially been signed quite yet.
He added that the UFC is trying to lock in a date for the fight, which is looking like either December or January.
“Nothing done yet – a lot of talks about the fight with Masvidal – he verbally agreed. I did too,” Burns said.
“They’re just figuring out the date. No date yet. November was too close, … so December or January. At least I know I have an opponent. Just figuring out the date right now.”
A fight between Masvidal and Burns is not only an exciting matchup, but it makes sense. Burns’ last time out resulted in a unanimous decision loss to Khamzat Chimaev.
The defeat marked Burns dropping two of his last three contests. As for Masvidal, he’s had a string of bad luck inside the Octagon himself.
Masvidal has dropped three-straight Octagon appearances, with his last win coming in November of 2019 against Nate Diaz via doctor stoppage.
“Gamebred” suffered back-to-back losses to welterweight king Kamaru Usman, before being bested by Colby Covington his last time out this past March.
A win for either man over the other could put them in prime position to re-enter the 170-pound title conversation.
