Fernand Lopez is happy that Francis Ngannou was able to secure the boxing match against Tyson Fury.
Lopez used to be Ngannou’s head coach as he started his MMA career and was there with him as he got into the UFC. However, the two sides had a bit of a falling out and Ngannou ended up going to Las Vegas to train under Eric Nicksick.
Although Fernand Lopez no longer trains Francis Ngannou, he says he still is rooting for him against Tyson Fury. Ngannou was able to secure a boxing match against Fury, in a fight he is a massive underdog in.
However, Lopez believes Ngannou power to make it interesting and thinks there is a chance the former UFC heavyweight champion will shock the world.
Lopez shares thoughts on Ngannou vs. Fury
“So, we might have Francis there, giving some shots. And with the life, you know that even the MMA, the boxing is a training, the dedication, everything,” Lopez said to MMAJunkie. “There’s a small slight pair of chance. If you have that chance to hit the chin when he’s fresh, you might just shock the world. Who knows? So, I don’t want to say, ‘There’s no chance. There’s zero chance.’ I want to say congratulations to him. Very good move to go to the boxing. In the end of the day, that’s a very good move. And then, good luck for him. Because, he have to keep dreaming, and he might just shock the world.”
If Francis Ngannou does KO Tyson Fury it would be arguably the biggest upset in combat sports history. However, it wouldn’t surprise his former coach Fernand Lopez. As well, if Ngannou does KO Fury, he would get an immediate rematch and make even more money in the rematch.
As for Lopez, he still remains coaching and will be in the corner of Ciryl Gane on Saturday in the main event of UFC Paris, as the Frenchman takes on Serghei Spivac.
