Shane Carwin tells us he’s the fourth best heavyweight in the UFC

If Shane Carwin and his family were driving through the mountains and a rockslide impeded the road ahead, Shane would stop the car, calmly step out, use his above average engineer brain to deduce the best spot to punch, then use his extremely above average fists to decimate the offensive rubble from his family’s path. As he re enters the car he would probably say something awesome like: “I’m not gonna let that slide, vacation back on” or something like that…

The former UFC interim heavyweight champion has had almost a year off since his defeat to Brock Lesnar last summer, and since we last saw him, Shane has dropped significant weight, gained a surgically repaired neck, and has been tasked with fighting one of the best heavyweights in the world in Junior Dos Santos at UFC 131 this Saturday.

If there is a fight more likely to shift tectonic plates let me know.

Shane was cool enough to take out of his busy day to briefly talk with us about his opinions on the Strikeforce heavies, punching things and more.

What was the first thing you ever punched? A school yard fight? angry and punched a wall? did you show incredible power even then? The only fight I have ever been in was with my brothers. Aside from that I think MMA was the first time that I ever threw a punch with bad intentions.

Tell us the evolution of the Carwin fist. HAHA I am not sure it has evolved as much as it is evolving. My Coaches have been working on my striking ever since I entered the sport. I have a long ways to go but I enjoy the striking aspect of MMA a lot.

What round does this fight end? Your official prediction. I expect that it will end late in the first or early in the second.

How has your life at your day job changed in the last 18 months? I was back to work right after the Lesnar fight and I was back training pretty quickly too. I love to be busy and my job and training provide the necessary distractions.

Have you ever torn one of your work shirts by flexing? Or do you wear polo’s to work? I might be blue collar but we wear our own personal clothes. I have torn many clothes while working but never Incredible Hulk style. I however do wear shorts Hulk style.

Who do you want to fight most from Strikeforce and why? I think Fedor would be everyones answer. He is one of the greatest of all time and he would be an ultimate challenge. Aside from Fedor, Overeem is a legit force.

Two heavyweight divisions 206-230 then 231-265 thoughts? I am not for adding a division. You are Light Heavy or Heavyweight. Why make a class for those that are not willing to either cut down or bulk up. I will be coming in under the 265 limit for this fight and I do not see it as a disadvantage.

What was your favorite inanimate object you have punched? I like the speed bag.

How is the new slim you? I love the new me and honestly I think even after the fight I am going to continue my Forged Fuel diet even if I am not fighting. I really think this is the best I have felt in a long time.

What are you…engineering right now? I have been off work lately. I am handling the GIS systems at work now along with my model.

Break down the top 5 heavyweights in the UFC. in your opinion who is where and who is fighting Cain next? 1) Cain 2) Junior 3) Brock 4) Me 5) Mir I will be fighting Cain next.

Do you think they will bring a Strikeforce HW over like Diaz? Not sure, it would be great but if they plan on keeping StrikeForce around they will need to keep the Strikeforce elite under the Strikeforce umbrella.

Chadd Griggs. Thoughts? Who?
