The ‘mentally undefeated’ Sean O’Malley just took his first ‘L’.

The UFC Bantamweight star regrets not cornering Petr Yan in his title rematch against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 273. O’Malley hilariously offered to team-up with Yan weeks ahead of the fight and Yan initially agreed.

However, come fight week, O’Malley opted out of it. He cited he didn’t care if Yan won. Well, that opinion changed following the bantamweight title fight.

‘I Should Have Been In His Corner’

Yan would end up losing to Sterling by split decision, with his corner being ‘sugar-free’. A few days after the defeat, ‘Suga’ would break down the fight.

“Yan’s takedown defense, other than the two times he got his back taken, is so elite. The hips, hand on the head, he’s got some sick takedown defense,” O’Malley said on his podcast. “But, he fought so emotional from the beginning of the fight. So emotional.

“Those looping punches… he fought super emotional. I should have been in his corner and told him, ‘yo Petr, settle down bud.’ I’ll take that L. That was my fault.”

‘Suga’ Praises Sterling

O’Malley might have not be proud of Yan’s performance, but he was impressed with Sterling at UFC 273.

“It was impressive, Sterling’s mindset going into that fight,” O’Malley continued. “Considering what had already happened to him in the previous fight… Towards the end of the [fourth] round, he was getting manhandled.

“At the end of the fight, for him to go in [to UFC 273] with that mindset of not letting that affect him was super impressive. It showed championship mindset for sure.”
