Petr Yan says he was ‘robbed’ at UFC 273.
It wasn’t a good night for former bantamweight champion Yan. In the co-main event of the evening, he was defeated by Aljamain Sterling via a very, very, very close split decision.
Robbery?
In his post-fight interview immediately after the fight, he told Joe Rogan he was robbed.
“I won this fight. I think I won this fight and I got robbed,” Yan said via a Russian translator.
“Joe Rogan, I want rematch,” Yan added. “I want rematch. I win first round— fourth, fifth round, I win. I want a rematch.”
Yan wasn’t the only person who thought he was robbed of a win. Some fellow fighters and social media were on his side. However, according to MMA Decisions, only two of the 18 media members who scored the fight gave Yan the win. Five media members scored it a draw.
The Verdict ‘Global Scorecard’ also had Sterling winning, by one point differential in the final score.
White on the aftermath
Another person that scored it in favor of Yan was UFC president Dana White, who thought that the judges ‘blew that one’.
The fight really came down to how the first round was scored, and it will be dissected for the next year.
Another blow to Yan was that the UFC president said he isn’t interested in an immediate rematch. He thinks former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw is next, but he realizes the trilogy between Yan and Sterling will always be there.
“That fight will be there,” White said. “Petr Yan is one of the baddest dudes in that division, [but] you probably do the T.J. fight.”
