Brazil’s Norma Dumont returned to the Octagon on Saturday night in hopes of moving one step closer to the bantamweight top ten.
Standing in her way of that task at UFC Vegas 77 was highly-touted prospect Chelsea Chandler. Dumont entered the bout as the No. 13 ranked bantamweight and a winner in five of her last six bouts. ‘The Immortal’ scored an impressive unanimous decision victory over Karol Rosa in her last outing at a Fight Night event in April.
Chelsea Chandler, who was making her sophomore appearance inside the Octagon, looked to build on the momentum of her first-round TKO against Julija Stoliarenko in her promotional debut last year.
Round 1
Chandler comes out as the aggressor, immediately pressing forward and mean-mugging her opponent. Chandler fires off a shot and delivers a counter. Dumont throws again, landing a big right hand that clearly rocked Chandler, sending her literally running away from Dumont. Both women clinch up against the fence and Chandler uses the time to recover before unloading a combination of her own. Chandler continues to be the aggressor while Dumont appears to be the more technical striker. Chandler lands a solid shot before clinching Dumont against the fence. Dumont is able to drag Chandler to the ground and begins to do some work in the guard. Dumont maintains control on the ground until the round comes to a close.
Round 2
Chandler comes out once again putting on pressure, but her lack of head movement is making her an easy target for Dumont to counter. Dumont unloads a heavy leg kick and then pushes Chandler against the fence where they briefly clinch. Once separated, Chandler again moves forward but is struggling to catch her opponent. Huge 1-2 combination from Dumont lands. Dumont moves in and scores an easy takedown. Dumont maintains her position in full guard despite openings to transition into side control should she choose to take it. Chandler begins fishing for a triangle choke but is unable to lock in the hold. Dumont postures up and eats a solid up kick from Chandler. Dumont fires a few ground-and-pound strikes, forcing Chandler to give up her back. The move pays off as Chandler gets back to her feet and clinches against the fence for the remainder of the round.
Round 3
Chandler comes out swinging, likely knowing that she is down on the scorecards, but she walks right into a takedown attempt from Dumont. Chandler gets back to her feet but is held against the fence by Dumont. Chandler trips up Dumont and takes her down, but Dumont pops back up. They separate and Chandler goes right back to walking down Dumont until getting taken down once again in the center of the Octagon. Dumont transitions to Chandler’s back and maintained control on the ground for the remainder of the third and final round.
