He was almost 40 years old. A pro wrestler with no MMA experience. Besides backhanding a fan in the crowd, CM Punk had little to no actual fight experience. Sure, Ben Askren held him down at Roufus Sport, Anthony Pettis probably did Vega moves from Street Fighter on him and lord knows what Tyron Woodley did. But would only 2 years of training be enough to hold his own against new prospect Mickey Gall?
No. It was not. Like, at all. Not even a little bit. It wasn’t even close.

Gall dive-bombed Punk immediately and worked him on the ground. It was a clinic. Gall constantly worked for submissions, and if Punk didn’t give him any, he smashed him. Punk got tore up violently and dominantly in the first round until he finally was caught in a rear naked choke.
After choking Punk, Gall said he wanted to knock the spikes out of goofy Sage Northcutt’s hair. This Gall kid may be going places, but right now he’s going to the bank unless Punk attacks him in the parking lot with a steel chair.
