- Michael Chandler heavily criticized Colby Covington’s performance at UFC 296
- “Iron” thinks “Chaos” should fight in the prelims
Michael Chandler couldn’t hide his disappointment over Colby Covington’s performance against Leon Edwards at UFC 296.
Colby was wack
Heading into UFC 296, Covington was confident about bringing back the UFC title to the U.S. However, Chandler said that what he witnessed in “Chaos” was far from patriotic and more of an awful fighting.
“After three rounds, Colby took 1776 shots to the face and had zero offense. If Colby’s offense was an accurate depiction of the US military, we would have never gotten our independence, lost World War I and lost World War II… It was worse than weak,” Chandler told Inside Fighting.
Colby shouldn’t headline an event
Chandler admitted that he is still pondering about moving up to the welterweight division. However, “Iron” pointed out that he would never aim for a showdown with Covington, especially after his performance at UFC 296.
For Chandler, Covington should not headline another UFC event and is best suited to fighting in the prelims next.
“Not now. Not after that performance. Right now, Colby should be fighting on the prelims,” Chandler said of Covington.
The title fight loss to Edwards saw Covington losing a championship bout for the third time. At the moment, “Chaos” is yearning for a clash with Stephen Thompson and not an instant rematch with “Rocky.”
As for Chandler, he is still expected to face Conor McGregor with rumblings that the fight will finally take place at the highly-anticipated UFC 300 in April next year.
