There is a big welterweight matchup set to take place at UFC 279 in September between rising star Khamzat Chimaev and veteran of the sport Nate Diaz. It seems that everyone is talking about this fight, especially other fighters in the division. One man who is sharing his thoughts on this matchup is Jorge Masvidal.

“I don’t really think Khamzat is as good as they say he is,” Masvidal told MMA Fighting. “I’m more of a see then believe [guy] and I haven’t seen anything that makes me a believer in this guy yet. I, personally, would love to break his face. Once he starts selling pay-per-views and s–t like that, I wouldn’t mind breaking his f–king  face.”

Chimaev’s stock in the UFC has been high since his very first fight. He jumped into the UFC by scoring two wins all in a matter of ten days’ time. He has now had five fights in the UFC and has finished his opponents in four of them. His last time out was the toughest test yet. He faced off against top-five fighter Gilbert Burns and for the first time, went to a decision. Many people were critical of that win, but he did what he needed to do in order to get the win, and now has a fight lined up with Diaz.

Diaz has been looking for a way out of the UFC. He is on the end of his contract and this bout against Chimaev could be the last time he steps into the Octagon. Diaz is a dangerous fighter and Masvidal can see him pulling out a win over a sill relatively young fighter in Chimaev.

“I think Khamzat probably wins, but I can see Nate putting him away in rounds four or five because Khamzat doesn’t have that gas tank.,” Masvidal said. “He doesn’t have that experience, and I think he gets too in the moment where he’s wasting energy doing stupid s–t. Nate is going to conserve all of that energy and get in his face when it counts. I think Khamzat should win, but I won’t be surprised if Nate stops his a–.”

Chimaev has caught wind of these rumblings from “Gamebred” and will not take them lying down. He took to Twitter to fire some shots of his own back at Masvidal.

“Wake up Buddy,” Chimaev wrote.

Perhaps if Chimaev can get the win over Diaz in his first PPV headlining bout, he will have enough clout behind him to face Masvidal next. Chimaev has been eyeing a title shot as well, and back-to-back wins over Diaz and Masvidal would surely get him there. Masvidal has also been trying to set up another fight with champion Kamaru Usman and with  Chimaev now ranked above him, it could be an interesting opportunity.
