Khabib Nurmagomedov was absent when Islam Makhachev defended his lightweight title with a brutal head kick KO win over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294. However, “The Eagle” made sure to share his thoughts on the massive event via social media.

Khabib knows history was made at UFC 294

In a compelling Instagram post, Nurmagomedov declared Makhachev as “the best fighter in the world” at present while also reminding people why he wasn’t in the lightweight champ’s corner at UFC 294.

“Best fighter in the world today,” Khabib wrote about Islam Makhachev. “Love you Brother and congratulations.”

“If you guys ask me where have I been? Why wasn’t I in the corner, I already answered this question,” Khabib wrote. “I don’t go to fights, I don’t go to the corner and I completely left everything related to MMA,” he added.

“I ask you to accept my decision the same way as my brothers, friends and sparring partners did,” he continued. “What our team achieved will forever be in the history of MMA.”

A permanent retirement

In 2021, Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from competing in MMA. Since then, “The Eagle” dedicated his time and energy to cornering his team, including Makhachev. However, Nurmagomedov decided to leave the world of MMA for good as he opted to spend more time with his family and personal life.

While MMA fans have been missing the presence of Nurmagomedov, “The Eagle” gave them a reason not to as he announced that his new documentary will be released next year.
