My childhood revolved around Mike Tyson dominating the heavyweight boxing scene like no other champion before him. Kids would often threaten to sign one another up to fight Mike Tyson as a defense mechanism when they ran out of relatives they could name who would have their back in a hypothetical suburban scuffle (we had vivid imaginations and some of us were fresh off of seeing Braveheart). None of us were boxing historians; Iron Mike was all we knew. Today, kids fear a heavyweight MMA fighter who’s 30-40 lbs bigger than Mike Tyson and packs the same amount of dynamite in his fists that structural engineers used to demolish large-scale suspension bridges. Anyone brave enough to fight Junior Dos Santos probably read the Darwin Awards and assumed it was fictional, but Frank Mir told MMA Uncensored that if he doesn’t get the chance to fight JDS while someone else does, he’ll be pissed…
I feel that I have the most credentials, going into it. I think I have the longest winning streak of the heavyweights that were already posted on that card to fight. As far as what the rankings are, I feel I have the most credentials going in, and I’m motivated to do so. It was funny, a couple of months ago, when I was training for this, I had been training for a five-round fight to begin with. Reason being that Cain Velasquez is a cardio freak, and if something were to happen with the title shot, I wouldn’t want it to be something where I had to turn it down because I wasn’t prepared for it. I mean, obviously I’d feel a little slighted (if someone else were picked to fight dos Santos). But, both those guys (Hunt and Velasquez) are great fighters. I would never be mad at them for taking advantage of the situation. Would I be angry? Of course. I wouldn’t wanna be at my house on the night that’s announced. I would not be a happy individual. I would probably just stay away from my house for a couple of days.
Frank Mir is still slated to fight Cain Velasquez at UFC 146 but the UFC is still reserving hope that Alistair Overeem will still be able to compete as scheduled, regardless of testing 14x higher levels of testosterone than the average man. Only the Mayans know if this fight was ever meant to go down, or if Frank Mir getting pissed is ultimately the reason the world came to an end on Dec. 21, 2012. [Source]
