Floyd Mayweather Jr left several superstars off his list when talking about the current “heavy hitters” of boxing.
Over the last week, ‘Money’ Mayweather has gone viral once again after being seen working with Ryan Garcia. The boxing legend seems to have taken Garcia under his win following an emotional calendar year where the 25-year-old suffered his first professional loss before bouncing back in December.
Mayweather and Garcia were recently seen at a mall in Las Vegas and did a quick interview with InsideFighting. When asked about the biggest superstars in boxing, ‘Money’ responded by naming three fighters:
“It’s some heavy hitters in the game right now. Not many, I should say. Right now in boxing, there’s only three – Canelo [Alvarez], Ryan [Garcia], and Gervonta Tank Davis.”
Mayweather continued by explaining how some fighters are wrong for believing they are superstars:
“In today’s time, fighters think if they got belts and made a few million dollars. They think they a star. That don’t make you a star. Being well-rounded all around the board makes you a star. Know when to speak and when not to speak. Everything plays a role in making you a household name, and I would know this. That’s why, if you notice, they still talking about me. It’s been almost thirty years and the Mayweather name is always being brought up.”

What boxing superstars were left off the “heavy hitters” list by Floyd Mayweather Jr?
Despite Floyd Mayweather Jr explaining his reasoning, boxing fans were frustrated by the legend limiting his superstar list to three fighters. During a recent episode of the Fight SZN Podcast by InsideFighting, Jesse Rowe had this to say about who fans believe should also join Mayweather’s list:
“It caused a bit of a frenzy, Timothy [James]. I don’t know if you were on boxing Twitter this morning, but it was all over the place. We were getting tons of mentions on our X account and a lot of people were upset that Terence Crawford and Tyson Fury weren’t thrown into that conversation. Obviously, some people believe Shakur Stevenson deserves some love.”
There’s no doubt that professional boxing isn’t receiving the same attention the sport once did. With that said, there is optimism among fans heading into 2024, as “The Sweet Science” could have a massive year due to several high-profile fights already booked or close to being finalized.
