Drew Dober has reflected on his March 2021 loss to Islam Makhachev.
Dober suffered a third-round submission loss in that bout with Makhachev, who is the reigning UFC lightweight champion today. The defeat snapped Dober’s three-fight winning streak. Dober followed up that fight with a unanimous decision loss to Brad Riddell, but he was then able to go on another three-fight string of victories before suffering a TKO defeat against Matt Frevola.
Dober’s most recent outing was a first-round TKO finish over Ricky Glenn.
Drew Dober Calls Islam Makhachev Fight A Learning Experience
During an appearance on “WEIGHING IN” with Josh Thomson and “Big” John McCarthy, Drew Dober looked back on the fight with Makhachev and he feels he can hold his head up high knowing that he learned from the loss. He now wants to prove he can be in that upper tier of UFC lightweights.
“I learned a lot from my fight with him,” Dober said. “He was able to dismantle my grappling whole heartedly and I took a lot from it both technically and mentally. Volkanovski with his first fight with Islam kind of showcased what I was thinking that needs to be different when you fight a person like him. So, me moving three rounds with him and then giving him a submission because I was going for broke just shows my caliber and what I’m capable of.
“Now, I’m not satisfied with going to the judges’ scorecards or even taking L’s. So, we’re changing and adjusting and improving to where I’m winning these fights and I’m not just hanging with these guys. I’m not satisfied with being a gatekeeper. So, we’re moving forward to really wreck the house.”
