Daniel Cormier thinks Alex Pereira could warrant a GOAT status to his name if he wins the heavyweight title.
A third title could make Alex a GOAT candidate
Speaking to MMA Junkie, DC pointed out that the era in which champions defend their titles for a very long time is gone. That said, Cormier thinks that while title defenses matter, Pereira has a strong case of becoming a GOAT candidate given his unique MMA career and if he manages to win the heavyweight title, which will make him a three-weight UFC champion.
“I think the title defenses matter. We had a great conversation about that like what warrants your title reign being considered great especially in this climate where everybody is so talented. Is it two defenses? is it three defenses? Because I believe the days of 10 title defenses like Jones and Anderson and them had, I think that’s over. I don’t think anybody’s going to be holding the belt for nine, 10 defenses. I think and if they do, I think with the level of the sport today, if a guy puts together eight, nine title defenses, yes he should be in the conversation,” Cormier explained.
“If Alex can be a guy that wins a third belt, that dude better be in the conversation as greatest of all time. And hell, he’s only done it, he’s only got like 11 fights in his entire career,” he added.
DC sees Alex excelling at heavyweight
Pereira is confident about moving up to heavyweight. For DC, that is not an issue at all as he believes “Poatan” will also do well in that division.
“He can be successful at heavyweight, I think that he can do whatever he wants look man, I’m past betting against Alex Pereira I mean, I’m past, saying that he can’t do something. I think time and time again Alex Pereira has proven he can do whatever he wants,” Cormier said of Pereira.
Pereira’s plan to move up to the heavyweight division has caught the attention of reigning heavyweight champ Jon Jones. In fact, “Bones” even hinted at being more interested in “Poatan” than Tom Aspinall. However, UFC president Dana White has already confirmed that Jones will face Stipe Miocic next.
