It’s 2023, which means that it’s a brand new fight year, and UFC Hall Of Famer Daniel Cormier has three fights he feels he must see on the calendar. Recently, Cormier took to his show, “DC & RC” to discuss what fights they’d like to see in 2023.

Cormier had no issue listing out his top three, which was headlined by the heavyweight debut of former longtime rival Jon Jones. “DC” picked a heavyweight matchup between Jones and Francis Ngannou, a meeting between Valentina Shevchenko and Zhang Weili, and finally a matchup between Khamzat Chimaev and one of the top three welterweights in the division.

Daniel Cormier Lists Top Three Fights Of 2023

“First one, I got to see Jon Jones fight Francis Ngannou. I have to. I have to see him at heavyweight. I thought last year was going to be when we saw him at heavyweight for the first time. I know Zhang Weili just became the champ again, but I think I have to see her against Valentina Shevchenko, because even though she hasn’t defended the belt, I believe that she’s the best.

“If she fights at 115, she’ll win,” Cormier said. “My last fight, I have to see Chimaev against one of the top three. I need to see him against either Edwards, Usman, or Covington. I thought we would have seen that already. Him against one of those guys. But if you see, these three guys have kind of separated themselves from the division in the regard that they’ve hung around the top for the longest.

“I understand that Belal Muhammad is building the resume now, but for the longest time it’s always been Edwards, Covington, and Usman. So I want to see Chimaev in there with one of those guys. Those are the three fights I’ve got to see.”

Cormier certainly has a point, Jones was expected to make his heavyweight debut sometime last year, however, negotiations with the UFC seem to have hit a snag preventing that from happening. He still seems eager to test himself against Ngannou inside the Octagon nonetheless. As for a matchup between the champion Shevchenko and Zhang, this would certainly make for an explosive matchup between two of the most fierce female competitors in the sport.

Lastly, Khamzat Chimaev has proven himself one of the top competitors at 170 pounds and extremely dominant. He’ll certainly be put to the test against the likes of title contenders such as Leon Edwards, Kamaru Usman, and Colby Covington.
