Things got a little more interesting as UFC 288: Aljamain Sterling vs. Henry Cejudo approaches. GOAT talks are being thrown ahead of the match and UFC president Dana White also shared his honest take on the subject.

Not yet, Henry

Speaking to TMZ Sports, White pointed out that while “Triple C” certainly presents a strong case to become a GOAT, unfortunately, there are a lot of great fighters out there that he needs to beat. On top of that, the UFC boss thinks even if Cejudo beats Sterling and Alexander Volkanovski, hailing him as the GOAT wouldn’t be fair as long as Jon Jones is still there.

“Well, there’s no doubt. The guy has broken a lot of records. He’s accomplished a lot here. But to go out there and start saying ‘Hey, I should be there on the Mount Rushmore’ when you’ve been retired for three years and when you retired, in my opinion, sort of early, you know… If he beat Aljo, there’s still a few fights out there for him to really cement himself as one of the greatest of all time,” White explained.

“While I agree he would be on the Mount Rushmore, still tough to call himself the GOAT while Jon Jones exists,” he added.

Battle for greatness

White previously said people should “give Sterling the credentials he needs” to become one of the best if he winds up beating Cejudo. Aljo, meanwhile, thinks he would be the rightful GOAT by doing so. After beating “Triple C,” Sterling is eyeing to move up to 145.

As for Cejudo, the plan is to dethrone “Funk Master” and derail Sean O’Malley’s hype train before moving up to make history by beating reigning featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.

All told, Sterling vs. Cejudo is a very important fight as one of the above scenarios could come to fruition.

UFC 288 will take place on May 6 at the Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey.
