Dan Hooker is ready to get back in the Octagon. He is excited to book a fight and instead of just letting a fight come to him, he is actively pursuing a few options. One man that has found his way into the crosshairs of Hooker is Tony Ferguson.

Hooker took to Twitter to call for a fight with former title challenger Ferguson, seemingly out of nowhere. The matchup was proposed by a fan on Twitter and Hooker ran with it. He asked Ferguson to “play ball” and that ball began to roll. He followed it up with some “fighting words” as he described them.

“I’ll smash ya face in,” Hooker wrote.

So why all the hostility? Hooker explained in an interview with Submission Radio, why he made the call to Ferguson at this time.

“I’m sick of training, I want to go into the fight camp, I want to fight and it’s just that time. I think that fight makes a lot of sense. You know, we’re both in like similar positions. And I think that makes sense. My management wants that fight. I think the fans want that so how do you pick a fight? You tell someone you’re going to smash their face and those are fighting words. If you want to pick a fight we got to use fighting words, ‘smash your face in’ are premium quality fighting words, can’t be ignored.”

Hooker knows that he and Ferguson are in similar positions

The proposal to fight was not purely based on a Tweet from a fan. Hooker knows that he and Ferguson would make for an intriguing matchup and he thinks they are in similar positions. Both men have lost multiple fights in a row and want to move back up the UFC lightweight rankings.

“That’s a big fight. Tony is like a big fight, a win for either one of us, puts the other one right back in the mix, right?” Hooker said. “And then that’s where you want to be. I’m not here to make up the numbers. I’m not here just for the easy win but I feel like Tony is a big fight. That’s a big fight for both of us, a big opportunity. So let’s just get it done.”

If this fight is made, when could it go down?

Ferguson has not yet responded to Hooker’s request, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen. Hooker seems to think this is the next bout for him and is ready to take this challenge on immediately. He states he wants to get into training camp right away and could be ready in October, November, or right now. As a backup, Hooker has also been calling for a fight with Mark O. Madsen on Twitter as well.
