Conor McGregor is still looking for a third fight with Nate Diaz.

The newest season of The Ultimate Fighter has just finished filming. When news broke that Conor McGregor had signed on to coach once again fans were thrilled. Immediately rumors begin circling of who could be coaching against him. Many names were thrown out there but ultimately it was announced that Michael Chandler would be the opposing coach.  Chandler and McGregor will be fighting each other later this year although the date is not yet set.

McGregor seems pleased with the selection of Chandler but is now announcing that he originally believed he would be facing another opponent. McGregor thought he would be coaching TUF against Nate Diaz he told Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour.

“The Ultimate Fighter just kind of presented itself. It was originally to be me versus Nate,” he said. “I didn’t mind who it was against, to be honest, nor do I mind who I compete against. That’s widely known. I had agreed to it with Nate, it was a day or two before, and now it’s Michael Chandler. I’m not sure what went down on that end, but it was me versus Chandler and that’s it. I have no problem with him. I’m happy with it. It’s gonna be a good bout for sure.”

Conor McGregor thinks a trilogy bout with Nate Diaz will happen eventually

McGregor versus Diaz 1 and 2 were some of the biggest fights in UFC history. They each hold a win over the other and many believe that a trilogy bout would have been in the works by now. Diaz recently left the UFC to explore opportunities elsewhere but McGregor is still holding out hope that the two will meet for a third time inside the Octagon.

“I’ll get that again. We’ll get that trilogy at some stage, for sure. That’s when he was gone that he was [supposed to be] doing the show. So, you know what way that is, it’s all politics and all that,” he said. “We must fight, we’re one a piece. It’s a great rivalry, and it was a great fight. So, we gotta square that away for sure.”

McGregor versus Chandler will be contested at 170 pounds. McGregor is hoping that a win will lead him to a welterweight title shot. Seeing as Diaz has left the door open for a UFC return perhaps those two will eventually fight for a welterweight title or just for the amusement of the fans.
