Looking to bounce back from a lackluster performance against Joseph Parker in December, knockout artist Deontay Wilder returned to the squared circle for a main event scrap with former WBO interim heavyweight champion Zhilei Zhang at 5v5: Queensbury vs. Matchroom.

With 63 combined knockouts against 69 career victories between the two, fans of the sweet science were expecting something truly spectacular between the two heavyweight stars in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Round 1

Deontay Wilder immediately comes out with a jab as Zhang looks to bring the pressure early, testing out the range. Wilder lets a right hand go, followed by another as Zhang continues to stalk. Both fighters are quite tentative through the first 90 seconds with Wilder throwing rights as Zhang jabs at the body. Wilder remains predominantly on the back foot as Zhang unleashes a right-left combination against the ropes.

A straight right from Wilder connects. Zhang takes a big swing but misses against the ropes. Wilder ties up and both fighters return to the center. Zhang continues to pressure but fails to unleash anything before the round ends.

Round 2

Things begin to open up in the second with Wilder landing a straight right. Zhang continues to target the body and lands a nasty uppercut in the corner that appears to have hurt his opponent. Wilder stays in the corner, choosing to slug it out, but it’s Zhang who gets the best of the exchange. Wilder eventually circles again, but inevitably winds up in the corner where Zhang unleashes a handful of big blows to the body.

Zhang jabs as Wilder shows hesitancy to let his right hand go. Zhang lands a solid left hand in close, backing Wilder up to the ropes once again. The final 15 seconds of the round see Zhang backing Wilder into the corner, but refusing to throw.

Round 3

Zhang picks up right where he left off, pressuring Wilder and landing a jab to the body. Zhang lands a short left in close before tagging the body. Wilder lets a big right hand loose but eats a shot for his trouble. Zhang connects with a jab and Wilder offers nothing in return. Wilder throws a right, but Zhang walks right through it, offering a short right hook of his own.

Once again, the round ends with neither fighter offering much in the way of offense.

Round 4

More of the same in round four, with Zhang pressuring and Wilder doing little more than skirting the outside of the ring. 40 seconds into the round, Wilder lets loose a right hand, but there wasn’t much commitment behind it. Zhang jabs to the body. Wilder lands a love tap with the left hand as he circles away, allowing Zhang to rip to the body of his opponent.

Zhang backs Wilder to the corner but is content to hold position instead of letting anything go. Wilder ties up, prompting a break from the referee. Both fighters return to the center of the ring and do a little more dancing just before the bell sounds.

Round 5

Suddenly, Deontay Wilder comes to life in the fifth round, throwing heavy from the get-to and landing a nice right hand. Wilder unleashes a few more shots as Zhang covers up. Zhang ties up and the fighters get some space. Zhang comes forward, landing a lead right hook that catches Wilder clean, spinning ‘The Bronze Bomber’ around. Zhang follows it up with another booming right that sends Wilder crashing to the canvas.

Wilder gets back to his feet, but still clearly out, the referee calls for the stoppage, awarding Zhang the victory.

Official Result: Zhilei Zhang def. Deontay Wilder via KO (right hook) at 1:51 or Round 5.
