Josh Thomson and John McCarthy turn their attention to Dana White in the latest episode of their show.
Since the beginning of the new year, there have been several big new stories in the MMA world. One of the biggest however was the video that was circulating showing UFC president Dana White and his wife in a physical altercation. Fans of MMA immediately reacted to this sight and began to voice opinions and take sides. Some even called for Dana White’s removal as head of the UFC. The discussions continue to be had on this sensitive subject and now former UFC fighter Josh Thomson and longtime MMA referee John McCarthy are chiming in.
Following the release of the video White and his wife both made statements. The clip shows them in a club or bar on New Year’s Eve, they both admitted to drinking when White’s wife struck him. He struck her back and they seemed to be separated. In their statements, both said that this sort of behavior was very much out of the ordinary and asked for privacy. That privacy has not been given as now White’s position within the UFC has been called into question.
Some may find the video disturbing, discretion is advised.
This is the Dana White video in question for those who missed it. Pick an athlete, owner or coach in ANY other sport that could be caught on video slapping their wife and it just kinda goes away. pic.twitter.com/wwyw6M7Q2P

Josh Thomson and John McCarthy spoke out about Dana White’s behavior on New Year’s Eve
Thomson and McCarthy host a YouTube podcast where they discuss hot topics in MMA. This week the pair dove into this situation with White. Both men agreed that the actions from both of the Whites were wrong, but had a problem with the way people on social media are calling for it to be handled.
“You have a husband and a wife who have been married for 30 years, and I’m gonna be honest, she slapped him, he slapped her back, they’re both wrong,” Thomson said. “He’s more of an asshole for doing it because he’s the male, he’s the husband. He’s the one that’s supposed to understand that you don’t touch women.”
Thomson was taken back by the outpour to “cancel” White. He believes that it is their personal problem and although both were wrong in doing so, outside people are more worried about the repercussion, McCarthy agreed.
“My opinion on some of it is that we have people out there that want something done about this incident that goes beyond the incident,” McCarthy said. “And that’s where you have to draw the line. You don’t cancel people out because they made a mistake… I’m not saying what Dana did is right. He was wrong… I look at this whole thing and I do think Dana needs some time away. It is not a good look for MMA.”
In the wake of this incident, White has not lost his job, despite calls for the UFC or their parent company to do so. The UFC has been on a break since before the New Year and now that events will be resuming perhaps he will address any further actions being taken.
