A large portion of my MMA fandom wishes that Alistair Overeem was still competting in K-1, DREAM, and Strikeforce — and absolutely crushing every opponent he came in contact with. I also want Fedor still to be (virtually) undefeated and people to perceive Brock Lesnar as that scary unstoppable dude in the UFC heavyweight division. Unfortunately it’s no longer 2009 and the entire landscape of the sport has changed — instead of clamoring over a potential Overeem vs. Fedor match-up, we’re just days away from a Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez trilogy. Four years ago those two dudes were budding prospects, now they’re quintessentially the ‘end all’ of the entire division.
I’m not sure what went wrong there (or if anything actually went wrong at all), but now the only time we get to see Fedor is when he’s discussing Cain Velasquez in weirdly lit rooms. Although we do have this video of Alistair Overeem giving a seminar in Russia, which is probably the closest thing the MMA world will ever see to a Fedor vs. Ubereem match-up. Check it out.
