Combat sports legend Alistair Overeem recently shared some details on his incredible body transformation.

Last month, MMA fans were freaking out over an image that showed ‘The Demolition Man’ shedding his hulking physique for a much slimmer frame. Of course, fans immediately began to speculate that Overeem could be dealing with some sort of medical issue. As it turns out, his sudden slimming has nothing to do with a virus and more to do with a lifestyle change that all started with becoming a vegetarian.

“Meat is not good for you. It negatively affects you. Yes, it tastes delicious. Even now, I could still eat meat, but I just choose not to,” Overeem said during an appearance on Lovin’ Dubai

“I started doing detoxing. I have this special nutritionist, Julian VanHoven. He’s in Germany and South America so our sessions go through Skype, but he’s like, ‘Yep, we’re gonna detox.’ I’m like a soldier,” Overeem continued. “‘Okay, let’s go.’ When I met him, I instantly knew this guy has knowledge so we started working and I started taking these supplements in a reasonably high dosage which you can just do on an empty stomach, and after a couple of weeks, my diet, my appetite changed.

“I would usually eat steak and eight o’clock in the morning. That was like a standard thing and then I’m like, ‘I’m full. I don’t want to eat this anymore.’ So then the next day, it was one food less. One food of steak I ate that day and then the day after that I didn’t want to eat it anymore.

“When I spoke to Julian, I asked him what’s happening. I don’t want to eat my steak anymore, but I want to eat my steak because I want muscles, and he said, ‘You had parasites in your body. We gave you the supplements, you start detoxing your body,’ and these supplements are just simple seaweed.

“Everybody could take it and this creates an alkaline environment which these parasites do not like. They will get hurt and die off and once you get rid of them, your tastes change. It’s not me who needs to eat meat, it’s the parasites that influence me, work through me to make me think I want to eat meat, but it’s not me and once you get rid of them, you don’t care.”

Alistair Overeem Continues to Detail His Lifestyle Change and the Potential Benefits

Alistair Overeem goes on to suggest that meats, sugars, and foods that are generally unhealthy for the human body create acidity in your system which gives way to these parasites that create the cravings we experience for those particular foods. When asked about the acidity that fruits contain, Overeem explained:

“Fruit always alkalizes. That’s a misconception. Fruit has sugar? No. Fruit has fructose. Healthy. Fruit does not create acidity. It alkalizes. We are designed to eat fruit. We’re not designed to eat meat so this acidity/alkalinity has to do with also cancer and this is another way to prevent cancer. If you go on an alkaline diet, the cancer cells will go away. You’re not even going to get cancer.”

Fruit contains two types of sugar: fructose and glucose. Proportions will vary depending on the fruit, but traditionally it’s split evenly. Glucose is unhealthy sugar. This is what raises your blood sugar levels and forces your body to create insulin to metabolize it. Fructose, on the other hand, does not raise your blood sugar levels. Alistair Overeem’s dietary information may not be spot-on accurate, but there is no evidence to suggest that fruit is harmful to the human body unless consumed at an alarming rate.

Fruits and vegetables are also an excellent way to prevent various forms of cancer, including cancer of the bowel, mouth, throat, stomach, and lungs. However, they are by no means a cure-all for cancer as Overeem seems to suggest. But no matter your opinion on his methods or the information he chose to share, the fact remains that Alistair Overeem appears to be happy and healthy with his new diet and lifestyle, and that is the most important thing.
