  • Darren Till hopes he and his pal Khamzat Chimaev could soon become UFC champions at the same time
  • “The Gorilla” opened up about Chimaev’s personality and the real essence of their friendship

UFC middleweight Darren Till has found a new best friend in Khamzat Chimaev, who is set to fight this weekend at UFC 273 against Gilbert Burns. Ahead of the next fight, Till talked a little bit about their relationship as friends and training partners as well as their hopes of becoming UFC champions.

Till and Chimaev as champions will be huge

Till has been a top-ten contender for quite some time now. Chimaev, on the other hand, will break into the welterweight’s top 10 if he manages to beat Burns.

While it could still be considered far-fetched at this point, “The Gorilla” is confident that he could someday be the UFC’s middleweight king. Of course, Till also sees “Borz” doing the same thing and they will both take the sport by storm as champions.

“I always think to myself like this…Imagine when I actually got the belt, what it’s going to be like? It’s going to be like stratosphere,” Till told The Mac Life. “Because I know, I’ve got the potential, I’ve fought the best, I’ve beat the best and I’ve been beat by the best. And then when I get that title mate, It’s astronomical, the possibilities are endless. And then, when Khamzat wins his belt, what the f*ck is going to happen? Me and him together, that’s going to be something.”

Chimaev is a “phenomenal character”

For some of his contemporaries in the welterweight division, Chimaev is just a joke or a so-called “hype train.” However, Till insists that there’s more to his personality that people don’t see.

According to Till, Chimaev is naturally “funny” with a “phenomenal character” but is also an exceptional athlete at the same time.

“He’s a phenomenal character,” TIll said of Chimaev. “I’ll tell you one thing. And this is legitimately from the heart, he is a funny motherf***er. He’s funny like the things he comes out with, just the things he say it’s just so witty. It’s broken English as well. It’s even funnier.

“In my opinion, [Khamzat is] our best athlete we’ve got and he’s just really took that on board,” he continued. “Everything he does even just like the something so small that people won’t notice, he’ll like post the photo and out of his own and tag [us]. He’s building that up himself and we appreciate things like that.”

“We help each other”

It can be recalled that Till flew to Sweden to help Chimaev in training. Apparently, the pair’s working relationship is not one-way as Till said that “Borz” also do the same thing to him.

“What me and Khamzat is now…we help each other,” he pointed out. “We’ve helped each other like it’s been his fight now so whatever that [he] needs me to do in the gym, I do. Because I’m here to help.”

Till is expected to be in Chimaev’s corner when he faces Burns at UFC 273. The duo will be hoping to secure a big win and will surely be having a blast after.
