Last Wednesday, MiddleEasy went black in our support of an internet wide protest against SOPA, while Lorenzo Fertita and the UFC decided to pledge a letter of support in favor of the controversial bill. Before you go off on Lorenzo Fertita, keep in mind he’s strictly trying to protect his product, and all of you who watch UFC PPVs on illegal web-streams are actually stealing money from the organization and subsequently the fighters who benefit from PPV cuts. That being said, we still think that SOPA is an abortion of a bill that gives the government entirely too much power to censor and prosecute individuals to an almost unlimited extent and unreasonably abuse that power. Put simply, if you were to share a Michael Jackson song with a friend on Facebook, under SOPA, you could legally go to jail for one year longer than the man who killed him. Anyone who fails to see the lunacy in that probably has a shrine of Kim Jong Il in their basement and you shouldn’t eat his mother’s meatloaf. There are already measures to prosecute piracy, there are also new bills passing each year that make it increasingly more difficult to get away with it, however, SOPA is not the answer.
JoshTheGod is a hacker from the UGNazi, and he has essentially declared war on the UFC for its support of the bill by taking to their servers and redirecting their traffic. On Sunday, January 22, the UFC.com was hacked and looked like this:
UGNazi then proceeded to hack the InsideTUF twitter account which, as of this time, is still under his control.
The UFC has remained silent as they recover their domains and restore content to fans visiting UFC.com, and had this to say in a statement today.
“On Sunday, January 22nd, the UFC.com website was redirected by a criminal hacker to another website,” a statement provided to MMA Fighting read. “The UFC website was quickly restored to the control of the UFC, and there is no evidence suggesting that any confidential information belonging to the company or its customers was compromised by the re-direction of the website. UFC representatives are continuing to investigate the matter and are working with law enforcement agents to prosecute those involved.”
While it appears order has been restored to UFC.com, JoshTheGod has assured the public in a concise statement of his own that “We aren’t done…not even close.” Considering that the Department of Justice website was hacked 3 days ago, and numerous other sites have gone down at the hands of other hackers defending their anti-SOPA position, I’d venture to guess that these guys aren’t going to stop anytime in the near future.
